Fire investigators suspect arson after two fires erupt at apartment complex

GREENVILLE, AL (WSFA) - The state fire marshall is investigating what they believe to be arson after two fires broke out at the Greenville Terrace Apartments near I-65.

Greenville fire fighters got a call around 3:15am that an apartment at the front of the complex was fully engulfed in flames. But, when they got there, they found it wasn't the only one.

Firefighters also responded to another burning apartment in a different building nearby.

Greenville authorities say they suspect arson is a possibility because the fires were separate.

Smoke and heat damaged nearby units, but officials say no one was hurt.

"I was kinda happy nobody got hurt. But I'm glad nobody got hurt because they were like close friends to me," says nearby resident Lakesia Smith.

Fire officials say no one was in this first apartment when the blaze broke out. Three people were in the second one. The fires are still under investigation. Authorities do not have anyone in custody at this time.
