DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

Citizens are lining the route from the Dothan Regional Airport to the funeral home after the family of a fallen Alabama Marine made the request.

Lance Cpl. Jason Barfield's remains are being returned home a week after he was killed while serving his country in Afghanistan.

Barfield graduated from Ashford High School in 2008. A Facebook page has been established in his name for friends, family and well-wishers to leave their condolences.

The focus of local media attention fell on Barfield last Christmas after he surprised family members with a trip home for the holidays. Video available here.

Barfield died last week while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Barfield's funeral services are set for Saturday.
