TROY, AL (WSFA) - Test results from the Alabama Department of Public Heath confirm that a student on the Troy University campus has contracted active pulmonary tuberculosis.
Shortly before noon today ADPH tested 177 individuals believed to have come into close contact with the initial patient. ADPH is reviewing those test results, if necessary, additional tests will be conducted starting Thursday, November 10.
A letter was issued to students and parents on Tuesday detailing the risk of exposure.
TB spreads in an airborne form, but requires extremely close contact in a short span of time to spread.
In the letter, University Officials explained those not contacted by the university for screening in all likelihood have not been exposed. If parents believe their student should seek medical care as a precaution, they ask that the student visit the Student Health Center, the Alabama Department of Public Health Office at 900 S. Franklin Drive in Troy, or contact a personal physician.
