Montgomery city employees get furlough day

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange says city employees will have to take a furlough day before Jan. 31 as the city struggles with declining revenues.

Strange announced the decision in a memorandum to employees on Wednesday.

He said in the memo that the decision was made due to slow revenue growth.

Three furlough days were included in the 2012 city budget, accounting for a savings of about $1.5 million.

It is not known whether the other two days will be used. The city has about 2,700 employees.
