Auburn comes up short in food drive contest with UA

Auburn fans hope the result of the Beat Bama Food Drive isn't a prelude to what transpires on the gridiron.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports (http://bit.ly/sdKcnd) that the University of Alabama handily won the annual food drive benefiting food banks in Auburn and Tuscaloosa, 237,079 to 134,102 pounds of food.

The results of the drive were announced after donations were tallied Tuesday.

In its 18th year, the Beat Bama Food Drive, known as Beat Auburn Beat Hunger in Tuscaloosa, was originally was slated to end Monday.

The food drive is part of an annual competition between Auburn University and the University of Alabama leading up to the Iron Bowl.

The Crimson Tide reclaims the traveling trophy, which is topped with a can of soup.
