Bentley awards $7.1 Million to assist low-Income families with heating bills

MONTGOMERY- Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded $7.1 million in grants to assist low-income families in Alabama with energy bills.

The grants will be issued to 22 community service agencies throughout the state and awarded to low-income families based on need. Funds will be used to help families heat their houses this winter.

The grant is being made available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and is aimed at helping eligible low-income households afford the energy required to heat their houses. Applications for assistance are being taken at local community service agencies. Eligibility requirements are based on income, family size and available resources.

Listed below are the Community service agencies that were awarded grants, areas served and the amount of the grants:

Community Action Partnership of Huntsville/Madison and Limestone Counties Inc. (Madison and Limestone) - $329,039. 

 Community Action Agency of Northeast Alabama Inc. (Blount, Cherokee, DeKalb, Jackson, Marshall and St. Clair) - $481,693.

Community Action Agency of Northwest Alabama Inc. (Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale) - $257,497.

Community Action Partnership of North Alabama Inc. (Cullman, Lawrence and Morgan) - $293,601.

Marion-Winston Counties Community Action Committee Inc. (Marion and Winston) - $103,959

Community Action of Etowah County (Etowah) - $174,787.

Community Action Agency of Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Calhoun and Cleburne Counties (Calhoun, Clay, Cleburne, Randolph and Talladega) - $344,211.

Walker County Community Action Agency (Walker) - $121,540

Jefferson County Committee for Economic Opportunity (Jefferson) - $795,530.

Eleventh Area of Alabama Opportunity Action Committee Inc. (Chilton and Shelby) - $151,420.

Community Services Program of West Alabama Inc. (Bibb, Choctaw, Fayette, Greene, Lamar, Sumter and Tuscaloosa) - $560,259.

Pickens County Community Action Committee and Community Development Inc. (Pickens) - $62,019.

Hale Empowerment and Revitalization Organization Inc. (Hale) - $51,578.

Community Action Committee Inc of Chambers-Tallapoosa-Coosa (Chambers, Coosa and Tallapoosa) - $155,109.

Alabama Council on Human Relations Inc. (Lee) - $210,366.

Macon-Russell Community Action Agency (Macon and Russell) - $174,695.

Montgomery Community Action Agency (Montgomery) - $367,564.

Elmore-Autauga Community Action Committee (Autauga, Elmore, Dallas and Perry) - $325,358.

Organized Community Action Program Inc. (Bullock, Butler, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Lowndes and Pike) - $418,601.

Human Resources Development Corp. (Barbour, Coffee, Geneva, Henry and Houston) - $345,693.

Community Action Agency of South Alabama (Baldwin, Clarke, Conecuh, Escambia, Marengo, Monroe and Wilcox) - $503,031.

Mobile Community Action Inc. (Mobile and Washington) - $876,281.

Bentley awarded the grants from funds provided to the state by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants.
