UNION SPRINGS, AL (WSFA) -

Authorities say a fire at an apartment complex in Union Springs claimed the lives of three children Monday morning.

The blaze swept through two units of the Peachburg Road Apartments around 9:00am Monday. Authorities say a 1-year-old girl and twin 4-year-olds - a boy and a girl - died of smoke inhalation.

There is no clear answer at to how the blaze started.

Firefighters say it took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.

An investigation is underway following the multi-fatal fire. The Alabama State Fire Marshal's office is involved in the investigation.

Locals tell WSFA 12 News they can't remember the last time three people have died in a fire in Union Springs or Bullock County.
