MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The state of Alabama received its official Christmas tree, an Eastern Red Cedar, Tuesday afternoon.

The process of putting the tree in position on the Capitol complex steps is underway.

Governor Robert Bentley's office says the tree was donated by Elizabeth Thompson, owner of the Feather's Plantation in Fitzpatrick. That's in western Bullock County.

The cedar tree is approximately 40 feet tall.

The annual tree lighting ceremony, sponsored by the Garden Club of Alabama, will be held on Friday, December 2 at 5:15 p.m.

Visitors can look at the tree by going to the Capitol's west side facing Dexter Avenue.

This is the ninth year that Ms. Thompson has donated a tree to the state.
