Report: 51% of UA freshmen not from Ala.

For the first time ever, most freshmen at the University of Alabama come from outside the state.

The Tuscaloosa News reports that ( university data shows out-of-state students and international students comprise 51 percent of the 2011 freshman class. That compares to in-state students accounting for 49 percent of the class.

Mary Spiegel, executive director of enrollment services, says the trend can be traced back to a goal to increase enrollment at Alabama.

The university's freshman class has grown for six years straight, but the growth has come entirely because of students from outside Alabama.

The number of Alabama residents coming to the Tuscaloosa campus peaked in 2008 and has declined each of the past three years.
