Authorities say an Alabama woman is pleading guilty to a charge of trying to hire someone to kill her ex-husband during a child custody dispute in 2009.
Kimberly Dawn McGuffie of Calera pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of conspiring to commit murder-for-hire. The 44-year-old Shelby County woman was indicted in the conspiracy along with her mother, who is awaiting trial.
Federal authorities say McGuffie called an acquaintance and asked for help murdering her former husband with a poisonous cocktail of prescription drugs. The man later became a confidential informant for investigators.
U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance of Birmingham says a child custody dispute was at the heart of the murder attempt.
McGuffie's mother is accused of supplying some of the drugs that would have been used in the conspiracy.
