MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A Montgomery firefighter is recovering after accidentally shooting while hunting at Oak Mountain State Park in Shelby County. Authorities said Justin Hart's weapon discharged as he fell from his tree stand. He's being treated at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
Hart has worked at Montgomery's Station 10 for two years. Lt. Eddie Bryant said he is a hard worker, and well-liked by the squad. They were stunned to learn about the accident.
"It was a shock. Justin seems to be an experienced hunter. And for something like this to happen to him was definitely surprising," Lt. Bryant said.
A group from the Station went to visit Hart in the hospital. They've also adopted Hart's family.
"They can call us, we're going to be there to help them," Lt. Bryant said. "We'll be there to cut his grass if they need us to. We're going to do everything we can to support him and wish him the best."
Hart is from Elmore County. A relief fund has been set up at First Community Bank in Wetumpka to help with family support and medical bills.
