MILLBROOK, AL (WSFA) - A 25-year-old Millbrook man is dead following a family feud that turned violent the day after Christmas.
Millbrook paramedics were called to a home in the 300 block of Honeysuckle Drive around 3:30pm Monday where they found the man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim, unidentified, was pronounced dead on the scene a short time later.
Officers on the scene said they were told that the victim apparently made threats toward other family members and was going to arm himself with a gun. It was at that point when officers say another family member took the threat seriously and retrieved his own firearm to defend himself.
According to family friends, the victim was shot and killed by his own father.
Investigators say the victim was shot with what appears to be a large caliber weapon.
Names are not being released at this time, according to Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson, until all family members have been notified of the death.
"There is never a good time for an unfortunate incident like this to occur," Johnson said, adding that "Holidays should be a time for families to enjoy each others company."
Johnson said the case remains under investigation. "There is no doubt this is a homicide," he said.
The Chief said statements taken from all those on the scene, as well as from collected evidence, make it "entirely possible" that it was self-defense.
No arrests have been made, and Chief Johnson says findings will be turned over to the Elmore County Grand Jury for consideration to determine if a crime was committed.
