DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

The identity of a critically injured suspect in a Dothan bank robbery is being identified.

Authorities say James Toothman is the suspect who walked into the Regions Bank branch at 4080 West Main Street just before 2:00pm Friday where he then committed an armed robbery.

Toothman fled the scene but not before tellers were able to get a good look at him and his vehicle, a gray mini-van with Florida tags.

Authorities soon spotted his vehicle traveling down Highway 231, south of Dothan. He accelerated as patrol units attempted to initiate a traffic stop, and a high speed chase was started.

Units from multiple agencies including the Houston County Sheriff's Office, Alabama State Troopers, the Dale County Sheriff's Office, Jackson County, Florida authorities and Florida Highway Patrol, all took part in the pursuit.

Investigators said the chase stretched from Dothan to the Bay County, Florida area near Panama City and lasted more than an hour. The chase hit top speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Officers in Florida used the PIT maneuver (Precision Immobilization Technique) to immobilize the get-away van. Toothman then lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway and rolled the automobile.

Authorities said the van briefly caught fire while the suspect was trapped inside, but the flames were extinguished. The suspect was transported by helicopter to a Florida medical center for treatment.

No police officers were injured in the incident. No additional information is immediately available. WSFA 12 News will continue to follow this developing story.
