Opelika teen killed in I-85 crash

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - An Opelika teen who was killed in a one-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon is being identified.

Investigators say Julia Lee Burdell, 17, was fatally injured after her Jeep left the southbound lanes of Interstate 85, crossed into oncoming northbound traffic and flipped several times.

The accident happened around 3:15pm near the I-85 off ramp at the Columbus Parkway exit.

Opelika Police and Fire, along with EMS personnel from East Alabama Medical Center responded to the scene, but authorities said there was nothing they could do to revive Burdell. Officials say she was wearing a seatbelt, but the severity of the crash killed her instantly.

An investigation into why Burdell lost control of the SUV is underway.

Alcohol has been ruled out as a contributing factor in this case.

Burdell was a student at Beulah High School and is believed to have been on her way to East Alabama Medical Center where she was an EAMC Auxiliary teen volunteer.

Her funeral is being handled by Frederick's Funeral Home of Opelika.
