A 25yr. old soldier with the Fairhope-based 1165th military police company was killed in Iraq in a roadside attack by insurgents.
Joe Birindelli, a spokesman for the 1165th's family readiness group, says specialist Christopher Taylor of Daphne, was killed Monday. Birindelli said private first class Brandon Powell of Fairhope received minor shrapnel wounds to the face.
Birindelli said military officials reported that the two soldiers were riding a humvee when they were struck by shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade. Brenda Govan, President of the support group, says the fatality occurred about a quarter mile from the 1165th's compound in Baghdad.
Taylor is the fifth soldier from the area to be killed in Iraq and the second from Daphne. 31year old Army Chief Warrant Officer Philip A. Johnson of Mobile was one of nine soldiers killed January 8th, when the black hawk medivac helicopter he was in crashed.
The county coroner's office has identified the two employees killed during the robbery of a CresCom Bank in Conway. The victims are: Donna Major, 59 years old, from Conway and Kathryn "Katie" Skeen, 36 years old, from Green Sea, according to Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden.More >>
