MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
A new bill will soon be introduced in the Alabama Legislature to help veterans find jobs. It's called Heroes for Hire, and it offers incentives to businesses who hire veterans.
House speaker Mike Hubbard told a Birmingham Rotary Club Monday that his first priority this session is getting the unemployment rate down and getting the economy moving.
Hubbard says Alabama has more veterans per capita than any other state. But those veterans are often coming from the front lines "over there" to the unemployment line here. The speaker says with thousands more veterans returning the need to find them a place in the civilian workplace will only grow.
The measure by Rep. Duane Bridges, R-Valley would increase incentives for companies that hire veterans of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The initiative would give businesses at least a 1-thousand dollar tax credit for hiring recently returned veterans.
"A lot of guys are coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan and looking for jobs and we want to help the veterans out so they won't be out on the streets," said bridges, a former marine. He said he expects the bill to be considered at the start of the session.
