Skeletal remains found in Autauga County

AUTAUGA COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - The Autauga County Sheriff's Department is searching for answers after hunters found human skeletal remains in a rural area of Autauga County.

According to the Autauga County Sheriff, a hunter bagged a deer Thursday morning in a field near the Vida community. As he went to retrieve the animal, he stumbled across a skull - that's when he alerted authorities.

Deputies arrived on the scene and located more skeletal remains.

The sheriff says they have no idea how long the body may have been there and it may take longer than usual to identify the remains as it appeared animals had gotten a hold of the body. He also added the skull showed signs of a possible gunshot wound.

The remains will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensics for analysis. Deputies plan to return to the scene on Friday to continue their investigation.
