VIDA, AL (WSFA) - "They said they found a skeleton and I was shocked!"
Ronald Spigener wasn't expecting to hear that a body had been found in a field near his home.
"Neighbor came over earlier and he said something about it was going to be on the news," he says.
Sure enough, he says word spread through the little community of Vida--near Billingsley--shortly after Autauga County Sheriff Herbie Johnson got the call.
He says a hunter found a skull when he was walking out to check on a deer he'd shot.
"We met him up here and he led us down into the woods and we found some more parts and remains," says Johnson.
Johnson says they found more bones just a few yards away and believes they have been there for a while.
"By being that some of the bones are scattered, then animals will do that--they'll move them around and about," says Johnson.
"Everybody will call everybody and I'm sure in a few days we'll find out," adds Spigener.
Folks in Vida say the area is typically very quiet, and an incident like this has many wondering what really happened.
"I don't remember anybody being missing the last year or so," says Spigener.
That's exactly what Sheriff Johnson wants to find out.
"[We'll] start working with surrounding sheriff's offices and police offices to see if anybody's missing."
Sheriff's deputies will search the area again Friday morning. Authorities still have to get tests back from the state forensics department, but believe there could be a bullet wound in the skull they found.
