I-85 clear following cattle truck crash

Eight cows escaped their trailers and were roaming along I-85 in Macon County this morning after a truck carrying 109 cattle overturned.

Six of the escaped cows were found and secured, but two are still unaccounted for. Nineteen other cows were killed in the accident.

State Agriculture officials, the Macon County Sheriff's Department and Macon County Volunteer Fire Departments responded to assist at the scene.

State Troopers and the Alabama Department of Transportation helped with traffic control while crews worked to round up the cattle and clear the scene.

Accidents caused by motorists hitting cows were reported, but only one minor injury was reported. The driver of the cattle truck was not injured.

State Troopers are investigating the cause of the crash.
