AT&T's personal pages option approved

The state Public Service Commission has approved AT&T's request to make receiving its White Pages optional.

The Birmingham News reports ( ) that commission voted 3-0 on Tuesday to allow the company to distribute the phone book to customers only on request.

AT&T spokesman Hood Harris said the program will be gradually rolled out to the entire state. The program has been tested in the Mobile market for the last two years.

Harris said AT&T is "pleased" with the vote.

Commission president Lucy Baxley said she has asked AT&T to waive the $3.50 monthly fee for residents who don't want to be listed.

Baxley said the commission has not regulatory jurisdiction over the company's fees, but she wanted to "strongly request" that the charge be dropped.
