Opelika skull now part of homicide case

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) -

Preliminary results on skeletal remains found at an Opelika trailer park last week show the person "died by homicidal means", according to a release from the Lee County Coroner's office.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences examined the remains before the determination was made. An official homicide case is now under way, though no specific cause of death has been determined at this point.

The Opelika Police Department began an investigation on January 28 after a human skull was discovered at a lot in the Brook Haven Trailer Park on Hurst Street. Two days later, additional skeletal remains were located nearby.

A full search of the grounds was conducted on February 1 by Opelika police with assistance from Auburn police and the Lee County Sheriff's office. During that search, the officers uncovered more human remains in a heavily wooded area adjacent to the trailer park. Authorities say the remains were within 75 feet of the original skull discovery.

While the victim's race and sex are currently unknown, Coroner Bill Harris' office says an examination of the skull leads inspectors to the belief that the the remains belong to a child around 10 years of age.

The case remains under investigation by Opelika Police, the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences and the Lee County Coroner's office.

Additional details are not available.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division at (334) 705-5220 or the Secret Witness Hotline at (334) 745-8665 or the Lee County Coroner's Office at (334)737-3620
