Despite C.C. Calhoun's DUI charge, city officials say his role as a council member is not affected. But that doesn't mean it wasn't on his mind during the council's Tuesday meeting.
"I'm here to do a job, I'm strong enough to get through this. With your prayers and your confidence I'll be ok," says Calhoun.
Police arrested Calhoun early Friday morning. They say he ran a red light at the intersection of the Southern Boulevard and Woodley Road.
When officers approached him they smelled alcohol, conducted a field sobriety test and took him to jail.
Calhoun wouldn't comment on whether he believes he should have been stopped, only to say he's proud of officers for their professionalism.
"The things will go forward within the legal system and then everything will be adjudicated. I just want to work the process, let the process do the working before we cast judgement on anything."
Calhoun says his constituents have rallied around him, making the legal process that much easier.
"I'm very pleased with the support from the community and from the city of Montgomery supporting me in this incident and asking me to keep my head up. I will do it. It's not the end of the world. We'll continue to do the things that make everything better."
Police also arrested Calhoun's son--Cornelius Calhoun Jr. They say he arrived at the jail about an hour and a half later and after an incident there charged him with harassment.
Calhoun says he's disappointed about it and will wait and see what happens in the court room.
