HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Phil Chalmers seminar on "Why Teens Kill" was held at Huntsville High School Auditorium Saturday afternoon.

The seminar explained why teens kill and what you can do to prevent it.

Chalmers, author of "Inside the mind of a Teen Killer," said he has talked to many teens who are in prison. He said kids give off warnings signs and there are things you could look for.

He says bullying and unstable homes are top reasons why teens commit the crime. The teen may also display suicidal feelings or become obsessed with violent media.

A Huntsville-based social worker says she learned something new during the seminar.

"I learned that different people commit crimes so you can't necessarily put crime in a certain category," said Nequaisha Bland.

More importantly, Chalmers says the goal is to keep schools and your family safe; and letting someone know if you see the signs.

"Alert the authorities, alert the school immediately; and make sure when they alert someone, they it's taken seriously because it really can save someone's life," said Chalmers.

The Huntsville Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff's Department co-sponsored the event.
