LOWNDES CO., AL (WSFA) -
A broadband plan for Alabama's black belt has been put on hold.
The plan is designed to build a fiber optic broadband network across eight counties in the black belt.
The South Central Alabama Broadband Commission is suppose to have 2,200 miles of cables laid by August of 2013. By August of this year 67% of the cabling must done in order for the Federal Government to continue the project. So far the commission has finished less than 1% or about 29 miles.
The project is currently under review by the Department of Commerce.
The commission says the reason they are behind on the project is because of the lengthy process to have the construction cleared and contractors hired to lay the wired are unfamiliar with Alabama.
