MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
A North Alabama senator is still
defending statements he made about teachers' pay.
Monday night he defended his
comments inside a school.
You may remember Woodville
Republican Shadrack McGill's recorded comments from a prayer meeting when he
said raising teacher salaries goes against a Biblical principal.
Monday's forum was inside the
Madison County High School library, and it didn't take long to get on the
subject of the Senator's comments about teachers' pay.
Taxpayers asked him to clarify his
statements from two weeks ago about keeping things in balance according to the
Bible.
"It's a Biblical principle. If
you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to
teach," said McGill.
"These teachers that are called
to teach, regardless of the pay scale, they would teach," he added.
Monday night taxpayers in the
audience demanded clarification of these comments, and the state senator
mentioned several times that he was misquoted by the media. He said the media
has continuously left out statements that he was in support of a teacher raise
and wanted them to be paid the most in the country.
"It's amazing what people will
believe from the media without asking you first if that's what you said or if
that's what you intended, so I am still having to clarify with
teachers," said McGill.
The senator is still having to
clarify with his constituents as well. Monday night he was asked to
explain his comments again and again.
Before the topic of teacher
pay was even brought up the senator said in his opening comments that
he was not a polished politician.
