Bama women's tennis ready for Blue-Gray

The 20th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team (3-1) will head to Montgomery to take part in the 2012 Blue Gray National Tennis Classic that is being held at Lagoon Park February 24-26.

This is the second year that the Crimson Tide has taken part in the tournament, and it will face Oklahoma State (4-1) in its first match on Friday at 11 a.m. CT.

"The Blue Gray is a privilege to compete in," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "Being from the state of Alabama, we will represent the University and the state with pride and dignity. We want to stand out in the way we compete and carry ourselves. We would love to take home the title, especially with it being in Montgomery."

Joining the Tide and Cowgirls in the eight-team field is Princeton, Illinois, SMU, Arizona, Auburn and No. 12 Virginia. Each team is guaranteed three matches.

"Oklahoma State is a great team," added Mainz. "We are looking for this to be a good match and a great opportunity for us. We are going in with a lot of momentum and a lot of confidence." Alabama last played in a pair of home matches on February 18 and 19, taking down Rice, 6-1, and SMU, 7-0.

The Tide has won its last three matches. In the latest poll, Alabama has two singles and two doubles teams ranked. In singles, sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane comes in at No. 15, while junior Alexa Guarachi follows at No. 40.

In doubles, Guarachi is a fixture in both duos, pairing with Macfarlane as the No. 13 pair, and senior Courtney McLane to form the No. 39 tandem. For more information on the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, including draws, players to watch and live scoring, visit
