Gingrich leads in ASU presidential primary poll

A new poll out from Alabama State University has presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich as the favorite in Alabama's March 13th presidential primary.

The poll surveyed 470 likely voters. The results show Rick Santorum was only 6-tenths of a point behind Gingrich. Mitt romney was only a few points behind.

18.9% of those polled supported Newt Gingrich.

18.3% supported Rick Santorum.

15.2% supported Mitt Romney.

But, researchers admit they were quite surprised by Rick Santorum's results.

"Rick Santorum is very much on the rise. One month ago he had only about 9% of the support among likely voters in the Republican primary. Now, he's up over 18%. All of this support is at the expense of Rick Santorum. And if the trend continues then he's the likely winner as far as we can tell," says Tom Vocino, Executive Director of the Center for Leadership and Public Policy at Alabama State University.

Researchers say just because Gingrich is winning in this poll doesn't mean that will last.

In fact, they believe he is losing momentum quickly on a national scale.

They polled different people each week, and Rick Santorum was the only candidate who's numbers went up.

28% of voters say they're still undecided.
