Jury deliberations begin in gambling corruption trial

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Jury deliberations have begun in Alabama's gambling corruption retrial.

Defense attorneys for Milton McGregor, casino owner, finished closing arguments Wednesday morning... the last of the closing arguments before U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson.

In closing defense attorneys for McGregor said the investigation into vote buying was motivated by race and politics. Prosecutor Kendall Day said defense attorneys were trying to distract the jury from evidence laid out in wire-tapped phone calls and in testimony from a casino developer and lobbyist who pleaded guilty.

Judge Thompson gave instructions to the jury and told not to let their verdict be influenced by a desire to change Alabama politics.

One juror, who had a doctor's appointment in Birmingham Wednesday afternoon, was designated by Judge Thompson as an alternate juror, so that deliberations could begin immediately.

The case went to the jury for deliberations to start at 1 p.m.
