Massive Stamping Press Headed To The Capitol City

A massive stamping press for cutting steel at Hyundai's plant in Montgomery is on it's way to the Capitol City.

The equipment was unloaded from the vessel Rickmers Tokyo onto a barge Wednesday in Mobile. The giant crown and bed of the press were too heavy for truck transport. The crown weighs 268-thousand-520 pounds. More than 80 trucks are carrying smaller pieces of the press to Montgomery this week.

According to Hyundai officials, this is the first of 25,400 ton stamping presses to be used at the plant, which will produce Sonata sedans and the Santa Fe sport utility vehicle. A second 5400 ton press will arrive in October.
