Monroeville is the county seat of Monroe County located in south Alabama.

It has a population of 6,800 people according to the 2000 census.

The city is the home town of two very prominent writers:

1.) Harper Lee - Author of To Kill a Mockingbird, which earned Lee a 1961 Pulitzer Prize.

2.) Truman Capote - Capote was a childhood friend of Lee and is the inspiration for a character in her book. He authored many of his own short stories and literary works.

Monroeville was named the "Literary Capital of Alabama" by the state legislature in 1997.

It hosts more than 30,000 tourists each year due to its literary heritage.
