MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
The Alabama Federation of Republican Women is calling on the Alabama Democratic Party to cancel an upcoming fundraiser with TV personality Bill Maher, whom they call "offensive" and accuse of being "hate-filled" and "misogynistic" toward women.
Bill Maher is a stand-up comedian and host of the politically-energized show Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO.
The organization held a rally at that Alabama State House Thursday morning to protest the scheduled event. Women at the rally were under the impression that the event had been canceled, but that is not the case according to the Democratic Party.
Maher, who is currently on a national tour, is scheduled to perform Saturday, March 17 at a local Huntsville party's event. His performance is set for 8:00pm following what is billed as the Chairman's Reception. Tickets are $100.
The Alabama Democratic Party says it is misleading to refer to Maher's appearance as a "Fundraiser with Bill Maher". The Party says there is a fundraiser set for the weekend, and some Democrats have tickets to see Maher's show afterward, but the Democratic Party is not affiliating itself with Maher. Representatives for the Party say if Maher cancels the show, they do not know about it.
Federation members displayed an enlarged sign showing a banner from the Alabama Democratic Party's website inviting people to the event. The sign even indicates that the ADP paid for the event and bills it as "An evening with Bill Maher".
The Democratic Party confirms the legitimacy of the banner, which has since been taken off the site. The Party says it was only taken down because all tickets it had purchased for the event have been sold. They say Maher will not be at the Chairman's Reception, only at a social event afterward.
Party officials said they are not making any money off Maher's performance. They simply purchased a block of tickets and resold them to those who were interested.
