Montgomery city leaders and members of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce held a meeting Thursday afternoon where they announced a new automobile parts manufacturer is setting up shop in the capital city.

DAS, the seat parts supplier for the West Point, Georgia Kia plant, will bring 240 jobs to the River Region as part of its plans.

In less than two months, DAS North America will start production.

"The seat track, actually the mechanism of it and also the recliner," says General Manager, James Uhm.

Since production starts right away, Uhm says they don't have time to build a plant.

So they're using a former packaging building in Hope Hull in the meantime and they're hiring right now.

"We're looking at 60-70 people immediately and then within the next two years 240 people," says Uhm.

"That's what we need is more jobs here to pull us out of this difficult economy," says Montgomery resident Whitney Wood.

"I know a lot of people looking for a job right now. A lot of people," adds Montgomery resident Billy Free.

After the initial site is up and running, the company will build a $50-million dollar plant at the Montgomery Industrial Park near Mitylene.

"The important thing is to get them started," says Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange.

DAS executives say they looked at more than 80 sites for their manufacturing plant including some in Auburn and Opelika--much closer to the KIA plant in West Point. But they say Montgomery came out on top every time.

"When we reviewed their offers and incentives here and the support, we had to go with Montgomery," says Uhm.

"Anyone should have the opportunity to look at the job and they should take advantage of it and hopefully it'll work out for them," says Wood.

"I think it's great. It's great for our city and state and it gives people a job," adds Free.

Positions range from production workers to human resources employees. Salary ranges at this point are said to be between $10.50 to $20.00 per hour.
