    In my editorial on Tuesday I chided our legislators for being the last state to pass a no-brainer  bill legalizing home brewing.  Today I want to challenge them to be one of the first states to pass another no-brainer;

    Kudos, or perhaps, cheers to the Alabama Legislature for passing HB9, the home brewing bill. Legalized home brewing may not be up there with education reform or prison funding, but it was overdue.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Last week's editorial on Governor Bentley's declaring proration of 10.6% in Alabama prompted these comments:

"There should be a sin tax on cigarettes and liquor…  and what about having a lottery like most states?  When I moved down here I had never heard of tax on food.  Food is a need."

Another viewer writes:  "Property taxes can be tripled in Alabama and still be among the lowest in the nation. Other states tax cigarettes at a much higher rate. Gambling, if made legal, could be taxed! All these great ideas are null and void according to our current legislature and outdated way of thinking! Some tough decisions need to be made."

And finally:  "Here we go again.  Let's raise the taxes on the people who have the drive to get up and go to work…  If you insist on taking more of our honestly hard earned money you must also hold the wasteful bureaucratic programs and their administrators accountable for the carefree way they squander our state's tax dollars…"

The same viewer wrote: The assumption that taxing my home at a higher rate will provide a stable tax base is somewhat misguided if the tax collector is accurate and timely in their assessment.  It's no secret home values are down over 50% in some markets and at least 30% in most Alabama areas."

As always - we encourage and appreciate your feedback.
