DESOTO COUNTY, MS -
(WMC-TV) - Bizarre new details have emerged from a traffic stop where a sheriff's deputy, a K-9 officer, and a suspect were injured in North Mississippi.
"He's definitely got issues," said DeSoto County resident Ronnie Shappley. "It's not normal for him to bite a police officer then bite a dog."
DeSoto County investigators said Christopher Conyers of Oxford, Mississippi did just that on Highway 78 Tuesday afternoon.
A DeSoto County K-9 officer stopped Conyers for following too closely. Dispatch called a backup officer as well.
Conyers, who was armed, did not cooperate.
"Became combative right away," said Dick Hackett with the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office.
Conyers then wrestled with both deputies.
Investigators said Conyers then bit the back up officer on the wrist. The K-9 officer then let the dog loose on Conyers. While the dog was biting him, Conyers rolled over on his back and started biting the dog.
"It was a totally disgusting scene," said Hackett. "The fact that an individual suspect would bite one of the deputies."
The dog is a Belgian Malinois named Branco. While everything was going on, an off-duty Southaven police officer stopped to assist the deputies.
"If that hadn't happened, we don't really know how out of hand it might have gotten," said Hackett.
Conyers is charged with two counts of assault and one count of attempted auto theft. Branco was not injured, but the deputy who was bitten was treated and released from the hospital.
Conyers was also treated for dog bites.
"I guess you get what you got coming," said DeSoto County resident Tommy Jackson.
DeSoto County investigators said Conyers was previously arrested on felony charges, but they are not sure if he was convicted. If he was, he will be charged with being a felon with a weapon.
Conyers is currently behind bars in DeSoto County.
