MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
It's a topic that has sparked fireworks in the political arena and with many of you. Stay-at-home moms verses working moms. Who's right and who's wrong? This issue was pushed in the limelight after Ann Romney was attacked for choosing to raise her kids.
Prattville resident Turkessa Myke is a single mother raising two kids ages 9 and 11 who says she has no choice but to work.
"I didn't have the option of just quitting my job and leaving," Myke said.
Staying at home or working is a decision mothers are faced with. It's an ongoing debate that Myke says there is no right or wrong answer, because both play important roles. She says it's really up to the mother and what works for her family.
"If you are able to provide for your family without working, then that's fabulous, but I don't know many mothers that can," Myke said.
for some, it's cheaper to be a stay-at-home mom. Myke says daycare is expensive but single mothers have to pay the bills.
"I remember when my children were younger. I paid out about $1,300 in daycare in a month's time, but it was something I had to do in order to be able to work, provide for my own family and my own livelihood," Myke said.
Montgomery resident Amy Robinson is married with two kids. She says she worked with her first born and then stayed at home until her youngest started school. She says her husband's income was a big factor in that decision.
"It's a full time job for sure. I mean no I don't get paid but I do get paid because I get to see my children grow up. I get to spend all day with my children," Robinson said.
Is it more beneficial to be a stay at home mother is a question that got many of our station Facebook fans fired up.
Denise Harden wrote, "While it is a struggle with one paycheck my son loves the fact that I will be there barring any unforeseen problems,"
Kelly Pouncey wrote, "It depends on the mother. Couple that with the fact that most employers don't value the family anymore, moms are left in a tight place."
A place both these mothers say is one they choose to be.
