The Alabama State men's golf team won the 2012 SWAC Golf Championship Wednesday at the Oak Wing Golf Club.

The Hornets posted a team scored of 300 in the final round and shot 894 for the 54-hole event, seven shots ahead of second place Jackson State.

Alabama State had four players in the top 5 of the event. Jose Rodriguez and Scott Benson tied for third overall with a score of 223. John Montgomery and Robert Grant tied for fifth, each shooting 224. Grant shot even par 72 in the final round, while Rodriguez, Benson and Montgomery each shot 4-over 76 in the final round. Corey Price finished 15th overall with a score of 241.

"God gets the glory for this accomplishment," head coach Dr. Gary Grandison said. "The character of our team made the difference. From our seniors, John and Scott, to Joseph Killebrew, a guy who stepped up and pushed our back players, this was our best team win thus far. And, they have a 3.53 team GPA.  They deserve the championship. (Assistant Coach Robert) Clark and volunteer coach Ms. Hattie Robinson were also key components to our program."
