Pregnant teen recovering after shooting

SELMA, AL (WSFA) - A pregnant teenager is recovering after being shot in the head during an apparent drive-by shooting. It happened at a house near the Lawrence Street and First Avenue just before 4 PM Monday afternoon. The teen is listed in serious but stable condition, according to Selma Police Chief William Riley.
Riley said someone fired shots from a white SUV while the 16 year-old girl sat on her porch.
"After the shots were fired, the 16 year old tried to make into the house, but was struck by the gunfire," he said. And then someone at the scene transported her to the hospital."
Police later found the SUV abandoned a few blocks away. Riley said police later discovered the teen is three months pregnant. Barring complications, she is expected to make a full recovery.
Neighbors said there are often children playing outside in the area, and the shooting has them concerned.
"This can escalate and it will escalate," said Velma Brewer, who lives near the shooting scene. "When you can't even let your children come in the yard because of violence and corruption, that's bad."
'It's senseless and people are going to have to band together in the neighborhood to put a stop to it, because this is no way to act," Riley said.
Riley said detectives are interviewing witnesses and are following leads. If you have any information that could help police, call the Selma Police Department at 334-874-6611.
