Woman's iPad purchase at Target turns out to be box of paper

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A trip to buy a new iPad at a Vancouver Target store ended in disappointment for one family who opened up the iPad box and found nothing but paper inside.

It's a nationwide scam that has now hit the Portland metro area. Earlier this week, Erin Levang and her family from Los Angeles were visiting relatives in Vancouver.

She and her husband had been saving up for an iPad and they decided to stop by Target to purchase one.

They didn't open the iPad until returning home to Los Angeles. That's when the couple learned the box was stuffed with paper and plastic wrap.

Levang said the box was covered in sealed cellophane when she picked up the box at Target, so she had no reason to think anything was wrong.

"When I opened it and it was wrapped in paper, (I) thought that's really interesting packaging. Very eco friendly - just some white paper and the iPad is white but I'm sure it's in there somewhere," she said. "And then no. This is not happening."

Target store managers are investigating the incident.

They don't know if the theft happened during the packaging process before it arrived at Target or whether a customer purchased it and returned the empty box sealed back up.

Store managers said they're working to get Levang a new iPad.
