AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -
Briggs & Stratton says it is making some major changes that will affect dozens of workers in Auburn.
It wants to reduce it salaried positions by 10 percent and anticipates about 250 employees will be affected by a consolidation of production in east Alabama.
Briggs & Stratton will no longer make horizontal shaft engines or lawn mower engines at its production facility Auburn. Instead, the plant will move its production to Chongqing, China, where similar smaller engines have been produced since 2007.
The Auburn facility will continue to make portable generators through the end of 2012. It will also continue to make engines for riding lawn mowers and other outdoor products.
Briggs & Stratton headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the world's largest producer of gasoline engines for outdoor power equipment.
The company says beginning in fiscal year 2013 it will focus on producing innovative, stream-lined products sold through Simplicity, Snapper and Ferris dealers and regional retailers.
