In Lawrence County, survivors took a unique approach to honoring those lost.
Feelings are mixed on Friday, April 27, 2012. Mixed in that they are sad feelings remembering those people who lost their lives a year ago, but also paying tribute to those people who were there Friday.
Audry Crowe was there and says there were 1000 people in the hospital that night, some seeking shelter.
The names of those people who died in the storms were read aloud and the dead were honored by the release of butterflies by family members who lost loved ones a year ago.
This iron memorial has local ties.
"We had a local artist paint it for us. I just thought, ‘Oh, I could get live butterflies - the lady monarch,' and I started researching the butterflies and what the release meant," said Crowe.
For ceremonies like this one, it symbolizes new beginnings and rebirths.
And a butterfly will remain here as a tribute to those people who lost their lives a year ago.
