Time running out to pass the job tax bill

Posted: Updated:

"This is a critically important week. This is Armageddon," Representative Jack Williams said today as he continues to work for votes to pass the bill which he calls important to the county's financial future.

Williams is trying to convince those outside of the county to back it.

"Folks outside of Jefferson County you can't build their county up by tearing Jefferson County down. Jefferson County is the economic engine for the entire state of Alabama," Williams said.

Over the weekend Jefferson County laid off another 75 workers. County Manager Tony Petelos says without this funding fix the county is in trouble.

"We started back in June, they cut 547 positions. That number will continue to grow."

Other lawmakers in Jefferson County are working on an alternative plan. One ends the job tax after five years and un-earmarks part of the money going to Cooper Green Mercy Hospital. Petelos and Jefferson County commissioners will be backing the distressed counties bill as the only option at this time.

"This legislation is critical to the survival of Jefferson County. This bill is critical to move Jefferson County out of bankruptcy," Petelos said.
