Cory McGinnis tossed eight innings of four-hit ball and Hunter Cross added three hits at the plate, as the Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team defeated Biola, 6-3, in its opening game of the Daytona Beach bracket of the NAIA Opening Round Tournament, hosted by Embry-Riddle at Sliwa Stadium.

With the win, the Warhawks (37-22) advanced to take on the winner of the top-seeded host Embry-Riddle and Siena Heights on Friday at 1 p.m.

McGinnis (6-4) allowed just one run in the outing, as his lone walk of the game came around to score. The Allison Park, Penn., native needed 111 pitches to finish eight innings, while striking out one and allowing just three runners to reach scoring position. His only run allowed scored after his departure and after the first inning, he allowed just two hits.

Michael Carden recorded the final three outs, including his lone strikeout to end the game, to earn his fourth save of the season.

At the plate, Cross paced the Warhawks with three hits, while Wes Hughes, Rusty Todd, Shane Turner and Chezz McCann each added a pair of base knocks. Cross and Turner each hit their team-leading 15th double in the victory to drive in runs.

Nick Turner took the loss for the Eagles, falling to 5-6, after allowing six runs on 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings. Karl Stuck tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings to conclude the game.

Biola had just six hits in the contest, including two by Johnny Farrington. All three runs for the Eagles were scored in the ninth inning.

AUM jumped on the board in the first inning, plating three runs behind RBI doubles by Cross and Turner. The third run came around on a throwing error by the Eagles' catcher Mike Lopez, whose attempt to putout Todd on a dropped third strike sailed into right field.

The Warhawks added a fourth run in the fifth inning, piecing together three hits, capped by a run-scoring single by Todd. Hughes led off the frame with an infield single and moved up a bag on a sacrifice by Remson. Cross singled through the right side and advanced Hughes to third, before a bloop single by Todd scored him.

AUM tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh inning, as Adam Russell delivered a pinch-hit RBI single and McCann a run-scoring double.

The Eagles scored their runs in the ninth inning, putting together a pair of hits and taking advantage of three walks. However, with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate, Carden was able to get designated hitter Nick Covyeau to ground into a double play and essentially end the threat.

Biola (26-28) fell into the loser's bracket and will square off with Southern Poly Friday morning at 9 a.m. in an elimination game.
