Nursing Home Week proclaimed in Alabama

Alabama will join other states in celebrating National Nursing Home Week and recognizing nursing home residents and staff for their contributions to their community. Governor Robert Bentley recently signed a proclamation designating May 13–19 as National Nursing Home Week in Alabama.

The Governor's proclamation praises nursing homes for the quality care provided to Alabama's nearly 24,000 nursing home residents and encourages citizens to visit a nursing home during this special week to see how "the staff and volunteers in nursing homes help residents live life to their fullest potential by providing a holistic approach to long term care."

"We invite everyone to become a part of our nursing home family all year long and especially during National Nursing Home Week," Alabama Nursing Home Association President Eddie Jackson said.  "By visiting, you will see first-hand how our employees provide compassionate care that leads to positive outcomes and highly satisfied residents."

The theme for National Nursing Home Week, Celebrating the Journey, informs us that every life is a story that needs to be told and honored.  And that every day offers a new chapter that needs to be written.  So whether the day is a comedy or a drama, nursing home residents and staff author today's story together.  Today, after all, is about living life to its fullest potential irrespective of age, infirmity or disability.  There is no actual recipe to follow or guide the process, just the quiet routines of daily caregiving, meals, activities and, let's hope, visits from family and friends who bring the joy that comes from the heart of a loved one.  The week is sponsored by the Alabama Nursing Home Association and the American Health Care Association.

The text of Gov. Bentley's Nursing Home Week proclamation is below.
