Consumer Watch: Saving by Surfing

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Tired of driving to the store? Just boot up your computer! New websites make it easier and cheaper than ever before to shop online. Some of the sites even pay YOU!

"There are a lot of ways to save on line," explained online expert Jeff Nobbs. "If you just go to the store's website directly, then you're missing out on big savings."

We talked to Nobbs via Skype about his new website, It allows users to earn cash back on every purchase they make online. More than 2,000 retailers are included.

"Usually, the first thing we hear is that it's too good to be true, but it's not," said Nobbs. "You actually do get cash back for shopping online like you normally would."

Here's how it works. When you buy a product through the Extrabux website, the retailer pays a commission to Extrabux, which in turn, gives you a cut. You can earn anywhere from 1% to 30% cash back, depending on the retailer.

It applies to both products AND services -- anything you buy on the Internet.

"You can book your hotel room, you can order a Netflix movie, you can do your taxes... and you'll get cash back on all those purchases," Nobbs explained.

Extrabucks also lists available coupons for online retailers. And when you build up enough money in your cash back account, you can request a payment via check or donate the money to charity.

Other Useful Sites

But Extrabucks is not the only website that assists online shoppers. WSFA 12 News found a number of other useful sites:

When to Shop for What

Now that you know WHERE to buy, what about WHEN? The day you buy online can sometimes affect the price.

Experts say Sundays are best to buy major appliances because retailers know that weekends are when home improvement projects are top of mind.

Mondays are the best days to buy electronics since so many people use the weekend to window-shop at brick-and-mortar stores.

"Then, when they get into work on Monday morning, they hop on their computer and buy the product online," Nobbs explained to us.

Experts say jewelry is cheapest online on Wednesdays.

And for books & entertainment purchases, do those on Saturdays.
