OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -
Opelika school and city leaders broke ground on the new multimillion dollar high school renovation project.
The new school will cost about $40 million. The project is being funded by a sales tax increase, approved by the city council.
Superintendent Mark Neighbors says the 40 year old building is in great need of repair. He says the two year project will be a difficult task, as students continue to learn on the same campus as the massive construction project.
He says the new brick and mortar building will provide better safety and learning environment for students, faculty and staff.
Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller believes the new state of the art high school will also help the economy, in terms of recruiting new business to the area.
