BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

They're said to be a little uncomfortable to walk in at first but Skechers claims shoes like its Shape-ups will get you back into, well shape.

That's what Letitia Aaron bought hers for.

"I feel the tension in my calves so I feel like they're working but you know there's so many gimmicks out there now you never know who to trust," said Aaron.

Aaron bought her pair a few months ago but just broke them out. Just as soon as she put them on, she may be taking them off and sending them back for a refund.

Skechers is refunding customers a total of $40 million as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission that says the shoes don't work.

That comes as no surprise for some people. Chasiti Gladys said she was never a fan of the shoes but she worked with woman who were.

"I had several coworkers who had them and they felt like they would make their bun tighter or whatever but no it didn't work," said Gladys.

Celeste Laborde was also against the shoe but said maybe their ads helped one way.

"Maybe they made people get out and walk more. I don't know but you can't rely on shoe technology to make that happen for you," said Laborde.

The company still doesn't admit any wrongdoing. Either way, Aaron said she'll still try to get her money's worth out of the shoes and hopefully some cash back soon, like other customers.

"Well, I'll probably try to get some money out of it but in the meantime I'll keep on wearing them and maybe they'll help me," said Aaron.

In order to get a refund customers have to have bought the toning shoes on or after August 1, 2008. If you did, visit the Federal Trade Commission's website to file a claim: www.ftc.gov/skechers.
