CALERA, AL (WBRC) -

The man who started the religious youth group called "The Basement" was arrested Saturday in Shelby County. Matt Pitt is charged with impersonating a peace officer.

FOX6 News spoke with Pitt's father, Larry, Thursday afternoon. He said that the incident was a "misunderstanding" and that the family was working to release an official statement.

Details surrounding Pitt's arrest are limited. FOX6 News attempted to contact Pitt and the Calera Police Department Wednesday night for a comment on this story. Our attempts were not successful.

Pitt is originally from Roebuck and according to his website biography he battled drug addiction in college. One night his father sat him down in their basement and said Matt had to make a choice: give up his addictions or live homelessly.

Matt says that's when he felt the presence of the Lord in their basement and he began a movement that has spread across the country. Pitt travels nationwide sharing his story and reminding youth God loves them.

Just two days before his arrest, Pitt hosted one of his basement events at Boutwell Auditorium.

Wednesday night, Pitt was hanging out with Reverend Billy Graham in North Carolina. He tweeted a picture of the two of them.
