The 2012 SWAC Champion Alabama State Men's Golf team played the opening round in its first NCAA Tournament appearance Thursday in the NCAA South Central Regional in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Hornets posted a team score of 319 on Day One of the tournament, played at the Club at Olde Stone. Scott Benson led Alabama State with a four-over par 76, carding three birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys. John Montgomery shot a six-over 76 with four birdies, four bogeys, and three double bogeys. Jose Rodriguez (80), Joseph Killebrew and Robert Grant (each with 85s) rounded out the scoring for Alabama State.
"I am pleased with our guys," head coach Dr. Gary Grandison said. "They had a tough battle on the front nine, and played well on the back nine. On the front side, John even had a ‘confrontation' with a seven-nine foot coral snake. I am so proud of our younger players that did not quit. We have a chance to move up and improve our position tomorrow."
The Hornets will tee off beginning at 9:40 a.m. Friday.
