MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Shandra Cooley says it was a big misunderstanding that escalated into an altercation Saturday afternoon at this house on Clarke Street.
"My mama and her lady friend, they argue all they time. The argue and then they are back friends," Cooley said.
For her three year old son A'Garian Martin, it ended in tragedy.
"And it results in my child getting hit and ran over and I got to see this. They ran over his chest. They crushed his heart. I'm talking about they crushed his brain and it ran out the back of his head. Oh lord, Jesus! I love this little boy!" Cooley exclaimed.
Martin was struck right outside of Wanda McWilliams's house.
"The argument started next door. It ended up over here," McWilliams said.
McWilliams and Cooley both say the male driver was not involved in the altercation. He was a customer who was picking up a dinner plate. McWilliams operates her business Wanda's Sweet Shop out of her home.
"They didn't see the baby. They guys didn't have anything to do with it. They just came and got there food and just got caught in the middle of it," McWilliams said.
"I'm not mad at the boy who hit him because it really was an accident," Cooley said.
Police say the driver fled the scene but later turned himself into police. Police also say a gun was shown during the argument, but didn't say who showed the gun. Cooley says shots were fired to break up the argument that was spilling over into the shared yard area of both residences. But police could not confirm that.
"Everybody was just running everywhere. I was running my baby was running. That's my baby, that's my boy. That's my only child," Cooley said.
"But it was a whole stupid thing that could have been avoided," McWilliams said.
Both McWilliams and Cooley agree the argument was definitely not worth this innocent life being cut short.
This is the city's tenth traffic fatality of the year. So far, no word of any pending charges for the unidentified driver who struck the child. Police are still investigating this incident.
