MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

An 11-year-old boy is recovering after being shot in the face in Morgan County.

Devin Grady was critically injured in the shooting accident Wednesday night on Union Hill Road near Criscoe Circle.

Investigators said two boys were shooting snakes at a bluff when Devin's friend shot him in the face with a shotgun. Officials said the boy did not know the gun was loaded and accidentally fired it.

Devin was taken to Huntsville Hospital with serious injuries.

"At this point the information we have is that the victim is till in critical condition, but is still with us and so we have just an awful situation of carelessness," said Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin.

Sheriff Franklin said the gun belonged to Grady but his parents didn't know they had the guns.

So far, no charges have been filed in this case. Devin remains in critical condition after surgery at Huntsville Hospital.

Devin is a fifth grade student at Union Hill Elementary School. Counselors were at the school Thursday to talk to students about the shooting.

"It's been a difficult day," said Cindy Hammon, Union Hill School counselor. "It's been a difficult day for the 4th and 5th grade teachers as well.  They're very close to the students. We have a very small students population and they are very close to all the students. And the teachers are very close and tight-knit.  And so it's been very difficult."
